Banana tree
The classic broad-leaved, light green Banana 'tree' - which is really a herbaceous plant, forms a nice contrast to the more delicate plants in most conservatories - also throws some shade. This variety won't flower and fruit in the UK - unless you have some special lighting techniques! It is easy to grow, and grows quite fast (3years to at least 8 feet tall) - but if it gets too big for your space, it also produces lots of 'babies' around its feet that you can cut off and start again with. Small plants (1 to 2 feet tall) curently available.
