Vaccinium myrtillus a native of our high moorlands and heaths, this low-growing bush has to have acid soil and produces small berries similar to the American 'Blueberry' that can be used in all the same recipes. It is said to have many health-giving properties and has been collected by country children for centuries, giving it many different local names like 'Whinberry', blaeberry, whortleberry, myrtle blueberry and fraughan in Ireland.
It is not easy to propagate, hence higher price!
