Papaver somniferum this large annual poppy with glaucous foliage and tissue-paper like flowers is very easy to grow on bare ground in any sunny or partly shady situation- as long as you don't cover the seed! Poppies are one of the flowers that react to direct sunlight to germinate.
The flowers will come up in a range of colours from pale lavender through pink to deep purple; some single, some double some fringe-edged - you never know what you are going to get! But they all go together well and will go on producing flowers throughout late summer. Bumblebees like their nectar and pollen. In autumn they make lovely big fat pods that are great for winter decoration.
