Thiourea Dioxide  This is used to reduce the dye vat solution (remove the oxygen). Without doing this you cannot extract the blue dye from any of the indigos. Thiourea Dioxide is safer to use and has a longer shelf life than previously used chemicals, but still can cause irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory system, so should be used with gloves and in a well-ventilated location.
