The Willow or Salix family are a large group that all tend to grow in damp conditions, root very easily and are useful for all sorts of purposes - from making baskets to garden obelisks, living garden furniture and dens for kids, bean poles and lots more! We grow several different varieties which have different colours and uses.
Willows are also essential in the wildlife garden as their catkins provide some of the earliest nectar and pollen for insects emerging from hibernation. Many of these insects and their larvae which feed on the willow leaves too (especially moths), are then food for spring bird chicks and also for bats and small mammals.
Willows make a lovely coloured bamboo-like screen if cut every year after the second, and are extremely simple to grow - just push the unrooted rods into the ground and leave! Full instructions sent with every order.
