Smyrnium olustratum
Hardy Annual
Unusual green flowered Mediterranean wild flower brought by the Romans
who ate the leaves, stems, roots and buds.Still very good to eat leaves as
you do spinach. Much nicer than spinach!
Also a feed source appreciated by horses.
Related to Angelica and Sweet Cicely, but not so strong flavour.
Umbel flower and deeply-cut leaf, more stout and stocky plant than many
in this family, grows to about 3 feet (1metre).
It is also very early flowering for Apiaceae(March/April) and has the habit of
only growing close to the sea coast - but does grow in our garden or containers
