Box tree
Dwarf Box plants are well known for making low knot-garden hedges. But we have some specimens that have mature 'trunks' and have been pruned to look like perfect little trees. These are quite drought tolerant and hardy and will just need a trim once or twice a year. You could plant them direct into the ground or keep them in their pot buried in the soil or gravel so that they are easier to lift and trim the roots by a third each year, as well as trimming the tops into whatever shape you want. The beauty of box is that if you make a mistake in trimming the top it will always grow back with new shoots within a few weeks (in summer, anyway)
