Elder Tree (Sambucus nigra)
The wild Elder tree (not the same as the Alder tree) Sambucus nigra is a fast growing delicate tree with flat umbels of white flowers in early summer that are very good for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, and bunches of deep red berries in autumn that the birds love. The flowers can also be made into a delicious cordial or a fizzy 'champagne' and the berries can be added to blackberries to make an excellent red wine or a hedgerow jam. This plant can be cut hard back each year in winter and will keep to a bushy size, so it can also be used as part of a wildlife hedge.
